The wild character of Karpathos maintains in the cliffs, forests, slopes, beaches and small plains an inexhaustible wealth of dozens of endemic species of fauna and flora of our country.
It is said that the island took its name from the now unknown plant “karpaso”.
Both the geographical position of Karpathos and the sustainable way of life of the inhabitants have preserved to this day a huge number of wild animals and plants, which are characterized by a large degree of endemism.
The areas “Central Karpathos: Kali Limni-Lasto-Kyra Panagia” and “North Karpathos and Saria” have been included in the European Ecological Network NATURA 2000 with codes GR4210002 and GR4210003 respectively and have been recognized by the scientific community as CORINE habitats, among the 39 of the South Aegean Region. It is an area of 154 square kilometers and covers both marine and terrestrial areas.
