Wind direction, its speed and constant strength, throughout the summer season, combined with the unique morphology of the area, make Karpathos unique for windsurfers.

All these characteristics have remained stable for thousands of years, since only by chance can not be considered the fact that the greatest poet of antiquity, Homer, called Karpathos “ANEMOESSA”.

For about ten years now, the area of Afiartis, located in the south of the island (where the International Airport), is considered one of the most famous, advantageous and suitable areas in the world for windsurfing.  Karpathos Surf Club operates in the area, on the side of Makry Gialos beach or known as Chicken Bay. The wind blows coastal in shallow mineral waters and achieves wind power between 2 and 7 Beaufort. It offers boards and sails for rent, as well as special lessons that have to do with the younger to older age groups and from the beginner to the sport’s experts.

The World Windsurfing Speed Championships have been held in the area of Afiartis since 2006.

The competition has brought together 60 top athletes from 18 countries and 5 continents, including 13-time world champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck and world record holder Finian Maynard.

The realization of the World Championship on our island and its annual establishment is a major sporting event, not only for Karpathos but also for all Greece, since during the speedway races, a series of cultural events are organized, which highlight and promote the culture, the unique customs and traditions of Karpathos and Greece abroad, as this event is advertised in all media and in a large number of European channels.

Apart from Afiartis, the beaches that are considered among the best for windsurfing are: Vatha, Pounta of Nikolakis, Valias, Makris Gialos and Agrilaopotamos.
